Plymouth’s Environmental Initiatives: A Community Commitment to Sustainability

Plymouth, Minnesota, is demonstrating a strong commitment to environmental sustainability through a series of proactive initiatives aimed at mitigating climate change and enhancing community resilience.

Climate Action and Resiliency Plan

In the summer of 2025, Plymouth embarked on developing a comprehensive Climate Action and Resiliency Plan. This plan focuses on three key pillars: advancing equity, mitigating climate change, and increasing community resilience. It encompasses various sectors, including transportation, land use, buildings and energy, waste management, water resources, local food systems, and green spaces. The city has actively engaged residents through community listening sessions and surveys to ensure the plan reflects the community’s needs and perspectives.

GreenStep Cities Program

Plymouth’s dedication to sustainability is further evidenced by its participation in the Minnesota GreenStep Cities program. In 2024, the city achieved Step 2 of this five-step program, which recognizes efforts in areas such as land use, buildings and lighting, transportation, environmental management, and economic development. Notable actions include the remodeling of the Plymouth Community Center following sustainable building standards, the operation of the Plymouth Metrolink transit service, and maintaining Tree City USA certification for 39 years.

Water Quality Improvements

Efforts to enhance water quality have yielded significant results. In 2024, Bass and Pomerleau lakes were removed from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency’s impaired waters list, marking the culmination of over two decades of collaborative work by the city, lakeshore property owners, and the Shingle Creek Watershed Management Commission.

Solar Energy Initiatives

To reduce its carbon footprint, Plymouth has installed solar panels on several city facilities, including Fire Stations 2 and 3. These installations, partially funded by state grants, align with the City Council’s strategic goal of environmental sustainability by generating clean, renewable electricity and decreasing reliance on the grid.

Through these initiatives, Plymouth continues to lead by example, fostering a sustainable and resilient community for current and future generations.
